For more than 35 years the company has specialized in breeding tropical vegetable varieties. East-West Seed is presently one of the 10 largest vegetable seed companies in the world and was ranked #1 in the 2016 Access to Seed Index.
Recognizing that farmers need access to quality seeds and knowledge on how to grow, East-West Seed has supported intensive farmer training programs since 2000. To ensure that pre-commercial activities are most effectively geared towards benefiting smallholder farmers the company created an independent non-profit foundation dedicated to facilitating knowledge transfer and improving on-farm skills and innovation. East-West Seed Knowledge Transfer works hand-in-hand as part of the company; showcasing profitable and sustainable farm practices in areas which would otherwise be of limited interest to many seed companies.
East-West Seed Knowledge Transfer is presently active in Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, The Philippines, Thailand, Tanzania and Uganda - and expanding to Nigeria and Bangladesh where the company seeks to grow new markets.
Better knowledge enables farmers to take advantage of improved seed varieties adapted to local agronomic conditions, with increased vigor and yields as well as tolerance to disease and stress. In addition, the marketable characteristics and post-harvest qualities enable farmers to better align their production towards the rapidly changing demands of their markets.
- Data Specialist
- Analyse KT app system and enhancement
- Review existing system and understand limitations
- Document requirements or contribute to user manuals
- If needed, propose other systems or modifications to the current system. Work with ICT to find the best solutions to enhance data collection processes.
- Work with ICT on archive and storage of existing data
- Generating data analytics, flowcharts and make data alive
- Interact with users to learn and document continually requirements
- Clean data before sharing it
- Propose new and interactive ways of presenting data - infographics, maps, geolocalisation - possibility of integrating with other secondary data (weather…..)
- Link with other systems or platforms
- Work closely with communication, social media specialist and content manager, graphic studio
- Work closely with technical specialist to verify accuracy of technical information presented and interpretation
- Work closely with project coordinators country to cross check all information presented per country
- Development of a platform to ease access and communication of data (with Knowledge Manager and ICT EWS)
- Collecting and analyzing the requirements for a new system from users (internal and external - partners)
- Planning a system flow
- Designing components of the platform and providing that information to ICT within an ICT project proposal
- Integrating existing data sets (KT app, Market intelligence, Baseline data, surveys, case studies, impact studies, farmer stories) and systems (including link to KT website and GrowHow)
- Interact with ICT to understand limitations
- Working and testing the platform before launching
- Maintaining the platform and continually improving it
- Maintenance of the platform and enhancement of the presentations
- understanding and planning to ensure that technical requirements are properly integrated with existing processes
- analyzing and searching for data in order to identify and answer business questions
- propose collection of extra data (survey or other) when needed to complete information and interpretation
- verifying accuracy and ethicality of the data presented
- Identify secondary data source to enhance platform; widening scope for answering business questions
- If a development process is conducted, the system analyst is responsible for designing components and providing that information to ICT
- Msc in agri data analytics, and/or computer science
- Outstanding problem-solving skills and a proven ability to independently deliver analytic solutions by asking the right questions, finding or applying the correct domain knowledge, identifying necessary data sources, building predictive models, and producing actionable results.
- Experience with geospatial and remote sensing data a plus
- Familiarity with cloud based or HPC systems and computation in linux.
- Strong skills in building visualizations of scientific data.
- Proven ability to work in a team setting and ability to complete complex projects on time and on budget.
- Superior communication skills, both verbal and written.
